I recently participated in the MEC Pace Setter Race around Thetis Lake. Even though the rain did not let up, and the trail offered a lot of mud to add to the challenge, the comradery of running in a group was very motivating and encouraging.
Research shows that setting goals, especially those that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely, can help us get where we want to be. For me, registering for a series of races has kept me accountable to continue to schedule time for activity, even when the demands of daily life creep in. An active and healthy lifestyle is definitely a life-long goal for me, and this is one strategy that keeps me motivated.
Nutrition also plays a large role in helping me meet my goal. For peak performance, whatever your fitness level may be, we know that every athlete needs adequate energy from food, the right balance of nutrients and enough fluids to keep hydrated. Registered Dietitians know that what you eat before, during and after activity can improve your performance, recovery time and enjoyment of your sport.
